Global Heart Hub
Global Heart Hub is an alliance of heart disease patient organisations across the world. They aim to raise awareness and understanding of heart diseases by sharing up-to-date information on treatment guidelines, best practices and patient experiences across the world. Global Heart Hub has recently partnered with The Health Policy Partnership, an independent health policy research organisation, to develop a report aiming to raise stakeholder awareness of heart valve disease across Europe. We are happy to share some informitaon for those who are interested: Read More

Aortic Valve Research Network

The Aortic Valve Research Network aims to optimize care for all patients with aortic valve disease. The focus is not on repairs or aortic valve regurgitation only. This resulted in an adaptation of the database, including a name change. It is no longer AVIATOR or LEOPARD but the Heart Valve Society Aortic Valve Database. Since early 2020 it has also been possible to include patients with aortic stenosis that are below the age of 65 in the database, besides patients operated for aortic regurgitation and/or ascending aorta aneurysm. What do you see as the role of HVS as a society, why was this needed and what is not covered by other societies?
As one of the founding board members of HVS, and board member of the previous SHVD it was very clear to me that the added value of the HVS would be in building bridges between specialties, involving scientists across different fields, and have a global perpective. Networked science through a Heart Team approach is at the core of HVS and distinguishes us from other societies in the cardiovascular domain.

Giles Dreyfus, MD

What do you see as the role of HVS as a society, why was this needed and what is not covered by other societies?
I see the HVS as a unique Society as it is made of cardiologists, surgeons and researchers. If the initial spirit and balance is maintained it should grow as there are no other forums where all these sub specialties meet. It has already drifted as initially was created by surgeons who were the only ones interested by heart valves. More recently especially in the last ten years interventional cardiology has revolutionized heart valve therapies. Along with imaging which has tremendously improved as well. Surgery is being challenged in every way and has to fight for excellence and provide more results. Industry has become a huge player sponsoring lots of research. One way or another Societies such HVS, should play a role to allow Cardiology and Surgery to remain equally important and promote studies comparing surgery with interventional cardiology whenever possible.
