Database Design

The HVS Aortic Valve Database is a longitudinal observational cohort study enrolling patients with ascending aorta aneurysm and/or AR, or AS. Centers all over the world who are interested can participate.

Some key features of the online database:

  • Under the scientific oversight of the Aortic Valve Research Network, which includes alle participating centers contributing to the content of the database
  • Under scientific responsibility of the Heart Valve Society
  • Hosted by Castor Electronic Data Capture (EDC)

Patient Population

The HVS Aortic Valve Database enrolls all consecutive patients aged 18 years or older who were diagnosed with aortic (valve) disease, and/or aortic aneurysm (root or tubular), receiving surgical or transcatheter treatment for either and receiving follow-up. Aneurysm of the aorta is defined as aneurysms primarily of the aortic root and/or ascending/tubular aorta. Patients with type A aortic dissection are eligible for inclusion as well. Patients with aortic valve stenosis can be included up until 65 years old at the time of surgery or transcatheter intervention.

Centers without an AV repair program are encouraged to join the HVS Aortic Valve Database as well.

Preferably, centers enroll both patient populations. It is important to enroll all consecutive patients within a center, in order to keep the database as representative as possible. However, when preferred, a center could solely enroll only part of the patient populations.

Data Collection

The HVS Aortic Valve Database is open for patient enrollment since January 2013. Collected data includes:

Patient characteristics:
  • Patient demographics
  • Comorbidity (EuroSCORE)
  • Diagnosis of valve and/or ascending aorta disease
  • Aorta phenotype
Procedural data:
  • In depth peri-procedural data
  • Echocardiographic data pre- peri- post-operative and at discharge
  • Complications at discharge
Follow-up data: (every year after surgery until patients' death)
  • Clinical data including complications and treatments
  • Echocardiographic data

Three good reasons to participate

  • Clinically oriented database
A clinically orientated database where you can visualize an individual patient’s medical summary.
  • The possibility to extract data of your own patients at any time, with access to all HVS Aortic Valve Database variables.
  • Initiating your own research and/or participate in multicenter analysis. Possibility to include extra variables in the database specific to your center.
